DRAGONBALL Z - Ocean Group Dubbing

Ocean Group – DBZ English Dubbing
Review Written By Kurishojo

Music – 3/5

The music during the episode itself was okay. I thought the music played when Gohan killed Cell was well chosen, very dramatic. It made it seem more tense and dramatic then the FUNimation kind of ‘techno’ stuff. The music when he went Super Saiyan Two was also pretty well chosen, although like FUNimation's, couldn’t stand up against the original Spirit vs. Spirit. The music played when the title of the present episode and the next episode was some of the worse I’ve heard of DBZ yet. It sounds like we should be hailing to the King’s sirens, not anticipating an episode. Twinkly with horns and trumpets, amazing how 5 seconds can be so annoying to certain people V_V They keep the original opening and closing themes as Canada has always had.
DRAGON, DRAGONBALL…DRAGONBALL Z!

Censoring – 4/5
Of course you could never get away with no censoring but they seem to be censoring less then they did before. Canadians always get more censoring but for once it was nice to see some normal, of course you’d expect it, blood and punches.

Dialouge – 4.5/5
Good dialogue, the exact same used in the FUNimation eps. Not too much changed and what is, is good for a laugh, humorously, not insultively.

Voices – 4/5
It seems, overall, that Ocean Group did a good job choosing voices. Most seem suiting to the character. For most, the only reason people would say otherwise is if they’re like me and have gotten quite used to FUNimation's Cell and Buu saga voices.

Goku – His voice was different then it was during seasons 1 & 2. I wasn’t too thrilled by it at first but I have to say, it’s like Sonny Strait, it really grows on you until you like it. I’d say he’s got the voice of Van, from Escaflowne, same voice actor I believe. When things really started heating up later in the Cell saga, I began to see how the voice suited him more as he began talking in a more serious manner.

Vegeta – One of the worst I’m sorry to say. He has the same voice he had for the first few seasons and although it may have the suited the shorter, scrawnier Vegeta of the past, it no longer suits him as well.

Piccolo – Good voice, same as the old seasons, recognizable as the voice of Duo from Gundam Wing and many characters played by that voice actor all around the animated world. I like it, although as the episodes move on he seems to sound less demony and more human. I guess that’s an understandable change considering his light-en-ing personality. I like it as opposed to the more pro-wrestler FUNimation.

Gohan – New voice, another one that needs time. At first I thought he sounded more like a tom-boyish girl then a warrior’s son but as with Goku’s, I began liking it more. The only major complaint I have with it is it doesn’t seem to the same effect when he screams, such as when attacking or powering-up, more like a yell, not like the rage-filled screams of FUNimation Gohan. When he’s being injured though, the voice is suiting, more sounds of discomfort and pain then the many grunts and groans of FUNimation.

Krillin – Same ‘ol Terry Klassen. Since I’ve seen this voice around the animated world so often, and on old eps and tapes, I’m used to it, although it was quite a change in the Cell saga after having Sonny Strait. My only complaint is when he yells he sounds a little squeaky but no one can make a proper Krillin groan of moral-dismay like Terry Klassen ^_^

Trunks – Another voice I found rather unsuiting, it seems a little too low-pitched. It would be interesting to see what it would sound like to have him and Goku switch places. I’ve only seen Trunks in a few eps so it’ll take some more time for me to truly get a full sense of it in different circumstances.

Cell – An overall good voice, nothing wrong with it. It works well for him, it sounds intelligent but hints at evilness. Sounds like the voice of Jakal from Mummies Alive, could be same voice actor, I’m still looking for a list of them.

Android 16 – A crying shame this one, not the best of voices. Very low, very scratchy. Hard to even understand at some points. Although, considering he’s unfinished Android, facts wise, Ocean Group made a relatively good call.

Chichi – Chichi still has her old voice and just like it was then, it’s perfectly suited to her. It can sound calm and mothering yet strong and ambitious at the same time.

Number 18 – It sounds like Ocean Group made a good choice with her voice yet the voice actor herself could use a little pick me up. The voice sounds good but the voice actor doesn’t put any enthusiasm into what she’s saying. Even the dramatic scenes just kinda drone out. Aside from that, it was a good choice, practice makes perfect even for professionals. I was also pleased they called her Number 18 instead of Android 18.

Mr. Satan - A suiting voice for his character, at first sounded a little more Homo-erectus then Neanderthalis. Hehe…sorry, my History classes are catching up on me :-p If you learn about ancient man evolution you’d understand ^_^() Anyway, a good voice, humorous and good at faking a faking voice ^^

Bulma – A good voice once Cardcaptor fans get around the fact she has Tomoyo’s (Madison’s) english voice. I don’t recall this as being her old voice yet still suiting.

Other – Dende, Ox King and Roshi’s are the same as before. All still suiting to their characters, especially Ox King’s. Dende sounds a little nassily but he is a kid so you know…Master Roshi sounds like an old man which is of course, as he should sound.

OVERALL – 3.5/5
I don’t think it deserved a full four, because of some of the music and voices, but I was overall pleased with it so it gets a 3.5/5!
